Peony Chinese Scroll Painting – Silk Wall Art – Lily Golden Background

A Peony Chinese scroll painting, this piece pairs classical brushwork with a subject that never gets old. It is the peony that holds the eye first; everything else in the scroll plays supporting role. The composition balances its subject with lily, rock and golden background, so the scroll never feels empty or busy.

Lines are precise and delicate and washes even and luminous; it has the rhythm of brushwork done without hesitation. People who collect this genre will read the meaning at once — the peony stands for prosperity and honor — it was the flower of imperial gardens. Expect touches of gold and lively, varied color throughout; the restraint is deliberate, and it works. Morning light and lamplight each find something different in it. It comes finished as a hanging scroll should be: silk-mounted, complete, needing no frame.

It wants somewhere you linger or pass unhurried: a study, tea room, or quiet hall. If you keep a corner for reading or stillness, this scroll was made for it. It is a fine example of lily and rock Chinese painting, the kind of piece that grows on you.
